Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and its precursor NT-proBNP are blood tests used to detect heart failure. ANP, BNP, and CNP are natriuretic peptides produced by the heart and brain. BNP is secreted by the ventricles in response to pressure or volume overload, indicating heart failure. Normal BNP levels vary by age and other factors. A high BNP level may indicate heart failure, while a low level generally suggests no heart failure. The Nursing Lab provides a free quiz on BNP and lab values.
